Maine Open Winery Day

  • Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery 347 Carroll Road Union, ME, 04862 United States (map)

Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery is celebrating the 6th annual Maine Open Winery day with wine tastings, spirits, food, fun, and education.   Maine wineries in conjunction with the Maine Winery Guild and the Maine Department of Agriculture created Maine Open Winery Day to raise awareness of this growing industry in Maine.

Join Sweetgrass for a tasting of wines and spirits paired with Sweetgrass Creamery cheese.  Wine, spirits, and cheese all made right on the farm!  Graffam Bros. Seafood, a third generation family business, will be on hand to serve up their award winning specialties like lobster rolls and homemade chowders.

Want to learn to taste wine like a pro?  Keith and Constance Bodine, owners of Sweetgrass, will be teaching a short class at Noon and 2 pm on how to taste wine and help you order and enjoy wine with confidence.  We’ll give you fun and informative pointers on how to buy and serve wine without the worry.

Medomak Valley Land Trust (MVLT) will be joining us for the day to lead guided hikes on the Carroll Farm Trail at Sweetgrass Winery.  MVLT and Sweetgrass have created and maintained a trail at Sweetgrass farm that encompasses the varying landscapes of the farm and river.  MVLT Trail map link is:  http://www.medomakvalley.org/trailmaps/Carroll%20Farm%20Trail.pdf    Medomak Valley Land Trust is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural, recreational, and scenic character and the traditional land uses of the Medomak River watershed for the benefit of the Medomak Valley and Muscongus Bay community.  Membership and volunteering at MVLT is a great way help us accomplish our goals AND to learn new skills, meet new people, and have some fun while helping to keep Maine beautiful.  Guided hikes will leave the winery at 1 and 3 pm.  Information about MVLT and a kid’s activity will be available.

Ever thought of starting a farm winery or distillery yourself?  Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) will be onsite.  MFT’s goal is not just to protect Maine farmland, but to revitalize Maine’s rural landscape by keeping agricultural lands working and helping farmers, and their communities, thrive. Since its founding in 1999, the MFT has helped to protect over 55,000 acres of Maine farmland, and have provided critical services to over 550 farm families throughout the state. Stop by the Trust’s table for information, t-shirts, hats and other fun gifts for farm enthusiasts, and to learn about becoming a member of MFT.

MFT and MVLT members who visit Sweetgrass or those who sign up to be a member at the event will receive a free wine tasting!
